This day in Tulsa history: the first barge arrives at Tulsa Port of Catoosa (January 21, 1971), making Tulsa the nation’s innermost seaport.My grandfather helped build six to eight of the roofs at the Port of Catoosa. Back in the ‘80s, we erected everything from the ground up: laid the foundations, erected the steel buildings, and all the concrete.
The Port of Catoosa, I definitely remember. It was a huge industrial park. I’d never seen anything like that at the time it was being developed. To see what it is today is absolutely amazing.
I went to Marshall Elementary School at the time, and I remember being sick from school one day, riding around with my grandfather to those Port of Catoosa roofing projects.
He had a cell phone, but it was one of those briefcase kind of cell phones, so he still had to go back to the office to get messages. I remember throughout the day, driving back and forth to the project back to the office to get messages and build the roofs at the Port.
