How To Choose an Experienced Roofer

In this business, unfortunately, we see a lot of “chuck in a truck” roofers who are here today and gone tomorrow. They can’t guarantee their work and don’t care about long-term quality, which means customers are paying the price for sub-par work. Here are three things to look out for:

1. No local references or affiliations.

It’s best to go local in a lot of cases. But when it comes to your roof, it’s really important. In the roofing business, we have to deal with a lot of out-of-state contractors who come in after storms or other disasters where they’re just looking to make a quick buck. And that means people dealing with storm damage may end up dealing with more roof issues after the contractor has left town. When you’re talking to a potential roofer, it’s always good to ask for local references or at least make sure they’re affiliated with a local roofing company that can follow up when they leave town.

2. Very little time in business.

Everybody has to get started somewhere, it’s true. But if someone hasn’t been in this business for long, they may not know the business well. The Oklahoma Roofing Contractors Association warns against “in-town storm chasers,” or people who just grab a truck and hop into the roofing business after a storm because they think they can make money on it. Ask how long a roofer’s been in business before you commit to having them work on your roof.

3. Very low bids.

You know the old saying: “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.” The same thing applies to roofing bids. If you get several quotes, and one company is significantly lower than the others, chances are you’re not about to get a good deal. Do a little research so you have a general idea of what it would cost to replace your roof (at least for the materials), and keep that figure in mind when you’re getting quotes.

How to Research Roofers

Thankfully, there are several associations with online resources for consumers like you. Before you hire any roofing company, be sure to check them out on some of the following websites:

And, as always, be sure to look up their online reviews and see what other people are saying about the company.
